Cape Atlantic Woodturners  Meeting Minutes

Location:  Egg Harbor Township Public Library

Date October 17, 2023 Time 6:00 p.m.

The meeting was called to order by the secretary, Sue Bailey, in Melissa’s absence. 

Treasurer

No treasurer’s report at this time.

OLD BUSINESS

December’s meeting is tentatively scheduled to be hosted by Alan Tasoff. Details to follow. 

TURNING CLASS

Joe stated the class at the vocational school are going well. Gerald asked Joe for the ages of students, as he is applying for an AAW grant, with the deadline being 12/31/23 for submission. Joe stated that new belts on 6 lathes. 

NEW BUSINESS

Toni donated some wood to the club. 

Gerald advised the membership that Art Bichsell has passed away. Gerald spoke highly of Mr. Bichsell and shared some of his talents and skills. He stated that Mr. Bichsell was a skilled toolmaker, and only got into turning to make urns for himself and his wife. Mr. Bichsell has donated his body to science. There will be a memorial soon, and Gerald will send an email to the club for anyone interested in attending. 

Joe Jones stated there is a free demo offered by Record Power on Saturday afternoon. He will send an email with the details. 

Discounts through PSI and Chef Supplies were discussed. Chef Supplies offers a 50% club discount on peppermills and saltmills. Order size is $200 minimum. Anyone wishing to order, contact Gerald. PSI offers 10% discount for our club. Advise Gerald to placed on PSI’s list of our members. 

Sources for exotics were discussed. 

Alan Tasoff stated that the Moorestown club has a “flat workers club” and expressed interest in starting something like that. 

Sue stated that Karl has introduced her to the Worldwide Wood Turners and gave a short description of the club. Stickers were offered to members and suggested that members check it out. Gerald stated he is also a member and that there is a tremendous wealth of knowledge available. Sue stated membership is free, and anyone can access the meetings on Wednesday evenings beginning around 7 pm.

SHOW & TELL

Alan had two drawer fronts of amboyna burl he was working work. He explained his process. 

Joe Jones showed an attempt at a spalted bowl which he abandoned because the piece was too punky. 

Gerald stated he plans to cactus juice a piece in the near future.  

Toni and Bob showed some free wood they have received from a neighbor and asked for help identifying the tree. 

RAFFLE

There was no raffle at this meeting.  

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 7:30 p.m. 

The next regular meeting the Cape Atlantic Woodturners is scheduled for Tuesday, November 7, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. at the Cape May Technical School. We plan to have the lathes available for any member who wants to turn. The classroom will be available beginning at 4:30 for anyone wishing to turn, with the meeting beginning at 6 p.m. Gerald has two lathes for the next meeting.
