Cape Atlantic Woodturners Newsletter
Volume #4, Issue #5
Subject: Club Minutes 5/20/2014
The meeting was opened at 7:00 PM by President Gerald Bruman.
Those in attendance were Arthur Bichsel, Doug James, Bob Broschart, Betty Campbell, Tom Henry, Alan Tasoff, Joe Smith, Ron Befferman, and new Attendees Sheryl Coleman
and Advah Dagen.
The first order of business was presented by Tom Henry relating to the possibility of our club applying to the IRS for us to become a not-for-profit Organization (501-C-3). That means we would not have to pay taxes on any revenue. We could receive funds from organizations to carry out the purpose of our organization, and receive donations from individuals who could then claim the donations a charitable gift.
With the above in mind Jeff Schnell provided us with a lead to a Convention Network. I contacted them and we have been asked if we would like to provide demonstrations at the Atlantic City Convention Center tentatively Sept. 9th.10th.and 11th for a "Backyard Country Living" theme. We would be paid for our effort and be provided Food and Lodging if required. The request is from: "Destination Phillie A.C., A DMC Network Company." We are being asked to provide woodturning demonstrations for guests to watch. They are willing to buy from us 100 pieces, 25each of 4 different items that they can hand out to the attendees. We should also be prepared to provide on site turned items which we can sell to the visitors. They have asked us to supply what requirements we would need to present a demonstration. We will discuss how many lathes we will need, Power, Tables etc.
Betty and Tom have provided me with 11 different samples for DMC to choose from. I will make a presentation to the DMCNETWORK in our behalf. We already have three volunteers for the project. Anyone who would like to volunteer please contact Arthur at firstname.lastname@example.org
We had a wonderful "Show&Tell" with Bob showing his "Bring Back Project" with two beautifully matched Candle Holders from Jeffery's supplied wood.
Next month’s "Bring Back" will be by Gerald Bruman out of the wood Bob supplied.
New visitor Advah showed some "Side of the Road" Wood turnings which were well done.
The Raffle went very well with most everyone participating. Our Treasury was in receipt of $35.
Bob Broschart started the night off by finishing turning last month’s Bowl Demonstration and cutting his hand on the sharp edge of the bowl to boot.....Band Aids were rushed to his aid by our in-house EMT members and all went well. (We saved the Bowl...)
The Demonstration for the night was by Ron Befferman showing off his newly acquired Carbide Turning tools. It was very interesting watching the ease with which the tools were able to cut through the wood material. All were invited to try out our new lathe using Ron's new tools. Judging by the amount of chips on the floor all was going well. I think we will have some members looking into Carbide real soon.
The evening was a real success with lots of turning and information gathering.
