Cape Atlantic Woodturners Newsletter
Volume #4, Issue #2
Subject: Club Minutes 2/18/2014
The meeting Feb. 18th was opened at 7:00 PM by President Gerald Bruman. Those attending were: Arthur Bichsel, Bob Broschart, Betty Campbell, Jeff Schnell, Gerald Bruman, Ron Befferman, Doug James, Joe Jones, Alan Tasoff, Tom Henry and Kathy Fulginiti.
The first order of business was to describe the process and order that the meeting would take. Firstly, there would be a "Show & Tell" table to display all of the items brought to the meeting by the members. Each member who displays an item for "Show & Tell" will receive 1 Free Ticket to the Raffle when it is performed. Secondly, all raffle items will be displayed on the "Raffle Table". Raffle Tickets will be sold at $2.00 ea or 3 for $5.00.
Each meeting will have a "Bring Back" Project in which each member will have a chance to win the opportunity to receive a piece of wood and a finished project from the previous winner, the new winner will make something from the given piece and give it to the next winner with a new piece of wood. Each attendee at the meeting will receive a chip when they sign in. During the meeting a winning chip will be picked randomly from the attendees as to who will win the next "Bring Back" award.
Each meeting will have limited business and a large share of demonstrations.
During the meeting we will have a "Show & Tell" gallery walk around the "Show & Tell" table to examine each piece of work. When the walk is done members will be able to ask questions on each piece of work displayed by its maker.
Gerald Suggested we do a group project as a present to the Library. He suggested a formal Chess Set as a project and a gift. He suggested that we each take a chess piece and duplicate it to be included in the set. Materials have not been decided yet and we
will wait for Arthur to produce full scale drawings to be used as a std. model for the set at the next meeting.
Ron has opened his home workshop for a turning session Saturday, February 22nd. This is an attempt to recruit new members for the club. Ron placed ads in a couple of newspapers and Gerald placed a craigslist ad for advertising. There were four responses to the ads. Good luck Ron.
Ron has also reached out to the Cape Atlantic Big Brothers/Big Sisters to try and create a partnership with them. We have offered to conduct a turning session offered by the CAW club for them. We are waiting to see if they will accept our offer.
Ron Befferman won the "Bring Back" award and next month will bring back something made from the piece of wood given to him and an additional piece of wood to give the next winner to make something for the following meeting.
The Show & Tell went well. Alan showed a Segmented Vase and cover. Doug showed two Thin Wall Cedar small vases, Jeffery provided a tall thin Goblet, Gerald showed several Inside Out turned units and a dried and finned bowel, Ron showed a small square Plastic Stone look alike fluted column, and lastly Kathy presented a remarkably thin Teak Weaving Needle. Good works and many thanks to the participants.
Our featured presentation was a well thought out and planned Penn Technology presentation by Tom Henry. Rather than just turn a pen, as most members have done, he explained the many tools and equipment now available to successfully produce beautiful fine finished products. Tom had many samples of equipment and finished pens of all types and sizes. The discussion went from the basics of Pen turning to the the ever elusive high gloss finishing of the pens. Many thanks to Tom for a wonderful presentation.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 PM
