Cape Atlantic Woodturners Newsletter

Volume #1, Issue #12
Subject: Club Minutes 12/20/2011

Our Holiday meeting was opened with a remembrance of members who have
passed away during the last year.

They were Nelson Brown, Peter Kolb, Sue Rotelline and Guy Buckelew. We will miss them all.

Election/Appointments of officers were made as the following...

  • President Ron Beffermen
  • Vice President Alan Tasoff
  • Treasurer Tom Henry
  • Secretary John Andrews

Tom Henry presented to the members the submission of the Minwax Community Craftsman Award which hopefully will result in a grant to our club. The submission is for the Cape Atlantic Wood turners Community Partnership Program.
Many thanks to Tom for his effort and thanks to the members who contributed to the success of the Bacharach Rehab Project.

Arthur presented the first issue of the Cape Atlantic Woodturners Monthly
News Letter. We will try to continue the publication each month soon after
the meeting so we all can keep abreast of the club activities.

Much discussion has been made as to the content of our monthly meetings.
Our last meeting was a Demonstration/Workshop on using the Skew in which
eight of our members participated. We learned how to Sharpen and correctly
use the Skew.

Our next meeting in January will be the home project of making a Wood Mallet.
Ash Blanks were handed out as well as Pictorial Instructions by Tom.
Each member is to turn a Wood Mallet as described in the instructions. Deviation
from the chosen design as well substitute materials will be allowed. It should be
great fun if all members participate and bring their work to the meeting.

The February Meeting will be hosted by Bob, Gerald and Arthur, it will be a Demonstration/Workshop on using the Skew to hollow out and make a covered Jewelry Box. All wood will be supplied. You are responsible for your Skew and Bowel Gouge as well as eye protection and apron.

March meeting will be as yet an undecided Club Project.. Be ready and think
of suggestions.....

April meeting there will be a Demonstration/Workshop on how to do Metal Spinning
on your lathe. This will give you help on mating spun metal to your wood projects.

As you read this News Letter Keep in mind you can provide information for the
rest of the club on Gadgets, Tools and questions for any future issue.
Please email any suggestions etc. or items you might have to Arthur at. awbpilot@comcast.net.

Show and tell was delightful, Gerald had 2 pine bowls and 1 cherry. This guy has a future once he starts turning 6' bowls. Unfortunately he is no longer allowed to use the kitchen microwave, Yvonne has banned him to the old one in the barn.

Doug made a beautiful thin wall serving bowl.

Ron made a non moving nutcracker out of Ash, it is quite well done.

Alan is in the midst of making a clam shell shaped jewelry box, it should be quite a beautiful piece once complete.

Tom Cambria Presented a beautiful display of Turned Buttons.

Gerald is contemplating the idea of making a life size nutcrackers on his 16 foot long lathe.

Many thanks to all who provided the food and drink for the fine Holiday meeting.
Also to all who helped on the clean up.
